The Etching

Cynthia Cinque March 1997

The song said,
"I’d rather be a willow
than live my life in pain."
I’d rather be a willow
than love and lose you
Or my cat who commiserates
or my African violet that never blooms.
Leave me etched upon some wall
so I feel nothing
Not even the prick of a needle.
Don’t you see?
I must grow old and die
and so must you
and my cat
and my African violet that never blooms.
