Looking for Balance

by Kaye Simmons

The many things that I can do
Are things I also wish for you.
While I am sad and tired and cold
I’m also happy, wired and bold.

I know not why things are this way
or how I’ll be on any given day.
I care for others, too much it seems,
Is that an oxymoron or only in my dreams?

Do I:
Care too much?
Give too much?
Ask too much?
I need to find my balance,
To hear myself say—

"I need myself for myself and
not for you today."
I can give and I can take
but you can only take. For you,
I wish that you could give,
What turns your life might take—

For life is full of twists and turns
But if you only give,
it burns. And if you only take;
How sad to not do both; give
and take; will only drive you mad.
