OUR MISSION
The mission of Sanctuary Psychiatric Centers of Santa Barbara is to provide a continuum of treatment, for seriously mentally ill (disabled) and dually diagnosed adults in order to prevent further hospitalization, create opportunities for community reintegration, and extend an on-going safety net to ensure long term remission, while maintaining the highest treatment and professional standards.
OUR VISION AND COMMITMENT
Our small group of founders, comprising interested lay persons, former psychiatric patients therapists, psychiatrists and counselors were concerned:
- that the high cost and limited availability of high quality mental health services made it impossible for many persons with symptoms of mental illness to receive the help they so badly needed
- that many people were being unnecessarily hospitalized and inappropriately treated with psychiatric drugs
- that the high recidivism rates and the testimony of patients and professionals alike powerfully justified continued innovation in thought and delivery of treatment services
- that even small, well-staffed psychiatric hospitals could not provide a non-authoritarian and non-hierarchical organization capable of the flexibility of response that allowed for sufficient time and energy for the issues of a client to be acknowledged and worked through during recovery from the height of crisis
As such, the primary goal of Sanctuary Psychiatric Centers is to assist individuals living with mental illness to reintegrate back into the community with the independent living skills necessary to once again become viable contributory individuals.
